Is it better to learn traditional Chinese first then work on simplified after?

I am taking Chinese at my university I have a choice to either learn traditional or simplified. I plan on doing a internship in shanghai but plan on going back and forth between there and Taiwan. I have heard it is easier to go from traditional to simplified is that true?
